About Us
Early Onset Parkinson’s Disease Ireland (EOPD Ireland) represents people living with Parkinson’s disease who are diagnosed under the age of 65. The organisation is led by people with lived experience and focuses on policy, service design, and system reform for working-age adults with Parkinson’s.
Parkinson’s disease is commonly associated with older age; however, a significant proportion of people are diagnosed during their working years.
- Approximately 18,000 people live with Parkinson’s in Ireland.
- An estimated 1,800–3,600 are diagnosed under the age of 65.
- Parkinson’s is the fastest-growing neurological condition globally.
- Ireland does not currently have a national Parkinson’s register, limiting effective service planning.
People diagnosed at working age face distinct pressures, including employment disruption, stigma, financial strain, psychological distress, and reduced access to age-appropriate supports. Early Onset Parkinson’s requires specific policy attention due to:
- Diagnosis during peak working and family-raising years
- Greater financial exposure due to early exit from employment
- Reliance on services that are often age-restricted or inconsistently applied
- Increased stigma, as Parkinson’s is often perceived as an older person’s condition
- Higher cumulative cost of care over a longer disease trajectory
