The Neuro Mapping Project commenced in 2022 as a joint project with Disability Federation of Ireland and the HSE. The project aims to shine a light on the significant challenges faced by people with neuro-rehabilitative needs when accessing services in Ireland.

A report from Phase 2 of this report was published in October. The report involved the insights of 56 individuals with lived experience and 137 service providers.

EOPD.ie’s very own Company Secretary, Joe Condon, has been involved in the project and spoke at the launch of Phase Two of the Neuro-Mapping Project. Joe is committed to contributing his time to projects such as the Neuro-mapping project in order to raise awareness of the barriers that exist for people with neurological conditions.

Joe talked about his experience on the Phase Two of the Neuro-Mapping Project and says: “I hope the report raises awareness about the need for more multi-disciplinary teams and better resources for services for people with neurological conditions. Some people have difficulty with accessing the different areas of care, such as, Speech and Language therapy, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy, which should not be the case. We need appropriate information on what services are available and we need a road map for all people with neurological conditions to access all the necessary services.”.

Key findings from the report include:

  1. There are not enough specialist community Neuro-Rehabilitation Services
  2. It is difficult to find what services are available in the community
  3. There are obstacles to attending services, including waiting lists, where you live and access to transportation
  4. There are not enough long-term supports, particularly for physical and psychological well-being.
  5. Having a support network is important.
