My husband was just diagnosed at 40!

Hello, my husband was just diagnosed with PD at the age of 40. I’m really worried what’s ahead of us and don’t know where to start. It would be good to speak with someone who has experience with this. Thank you

  1. First and foremost: do not panic! You’re in the right place! Getting news like this is never easy. On a personal level I found getting a diagnosis was a huge relief..I thought I was literally going insane. It’s the little things and the big things that are so hard to explain to anyone. You can say “I have a headache” friends and our families know and understand what that is. Parkinson’s manifests in so many different ways from one day to the next …and ‘explaining’ yourself is a stress in and of itself. Upon my diagnosis I initially went to the Parkinson’s Association meeting. I’m 56 and while I seem normal I’m not. There’s an older cohort generally at these gatherings and seeing people in late stage Parkinson’s can spook you. I would have ran out the door but I was cramping really bad. I got home googled early onset Parkinson’s ..found eopd.ie ,signed up and Mary rang me back. It was then, for the first time since I these started to feel ‘weird’ that I was able to exhale. I suppose what I’m trying to say is this. Do your research, talk to your husband and get to understand how this works make a plan and take a long walk in some nice autumnal sun and talk honestly and openly how you both feel. There’s so much stuff online you could/can go down the rabbit hole. Try and resist (I didn’t ) and take each day as it unfolds. There’s excellent meds that can make a big improvement to your husbands life. Keep coming back here. The eopd community is fantastic. Also – meet the Parkinson’s nurse in your closest hospital. Your consultant will have probably hooked you up already. Go and discuss what happening for you both and keep pushing. Oh! Get your husband to exercise as much as he can. Ironically..I’ve never been fitter -always an upside. The very best to you and your husband. It’ll all be ok!
