The Guardian newspaper published an article on Monday 28th October, with the headline of ‘Number studying nursing down sharply in all parts of England, RCN says’. This article highlighted that there has been a sharp decline in people studying to become nurses in the UK. Tobi Thomas, who wrote the article, states that that acceptance rate on nursing courses in north-east England had suffered a reduction by as much as 40%. The reduction in London was 12%. There are currently 31,000 unfilled nursing posts in the NHS.
Since all the health services in Europe fill their shortfall from the same lower-middle-income economies, an increase in NHS requirements will make it more difficult to fill the vacancies and demand for nurses in Ireland. This is bound to impact the availability of specialist nurses to serve the growing needs of those diagnosed with Early Onset Parkinsons Disease (EOPD) We will have to wait and see what impact there is for EOPD people.
