IPPOSI launches call for jurors to join its third Citizens’ Jury on the use of AI in healthcare

Project Title:
The citizens’ jury will explore the question: “Should we increase the use of AI (artificial intelligence) in healthcare in Ireland?”

Who is the organiser?
The Irish Platform for Patient Organisations, Science and Industry (IPPOSI) organises citizens’ juries to promote dialogue and deliberation around ‘tricky’ health topics.

As a patient-led, non-profit organisation IPPOSI has a history of engaging members of the public and patient communities. Two citizens’ juries have been delivered by IPPOSI in recent years: on access to health information in 2021, and on genomics in health care and health research in 2022.

To explore this topic ‘Should we increase the use of AI in health care”, IPPOSI has received part funding from Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) as well as a number of unrestricted grants from IPPOSI industry members.

What is a citizen’s jury?
A citizens’ jury is a method of public deliberation that invites a cross-section of the public to learn about a topic over several online sessions, to analyse ‘evidence’ presented by a range of witnesses, and to generate their own recommendations in the form of a ‘verdict’.

What is the objective of this citizens’ Jury?
The objective is to arrive at a consensus on the issues raised during the process, with recommendations delivered to Government and health leaders ahead of decisions around the use of AI in health care in Ireland.

Who should apply to participate in the citizens’ jury?
Anyone who is residing in the Republic of Ireland, and who is at least 18 years of age is welcome to apply. No prior knowledge of the topic is required.

Are jurors remunerated?
Jurors may opt to receive €400 on the final day of the jury for attending and taking part in all sessions. Travel and accommodation expenses to the in-person deliberation days in Dublin will be covered by IPPOSI.

How will jurors be selected?
Using an algorithm, whose design is overseen by an expert from Trinity College Dublin (TCD), jurors will be randomly selected from the applications received and the final composition of the jury will be broadly representative of the Irish population (CSO census).
